Mitilinii, Samos
The village of Mitilinii is built upon a beautiful plateau, in central Samos. It is situated 10 km away from the city of Samos and is populated with approximately 2.000 permanent inhabitants. The village was established mostly of people that relocated from the nearby island of Mitilini, thus the name. In the nearby plain of Mesokabos, which is 3 km away from the village of Mitilinii, there are archaeological findings from the “Cyclopean walls”, which show that the area was inhabited since the early archaic years.
Mitilinii is a lively village with active people. In the village squares there are many restaurants and bars and in the nearby area one can find all kinds of shops. In time, the area is being rebuilt, maintaining however all traditional elements intact, as those give the village its special, local color.
The village is surrounded by forests and dense vegetation, suitable for hiking. Through Mitilinii, runs the Hisios stream, which makes the soil in the area fertile. People cultivate and produce olives and olive oil, wine, currants, cereals, fruits and vegetables.
Sightseeing in the village will lead you to the Paleontology Museum/Museum of Aegean Natural History. It exhibits lots of fossilized animals and paleontological findings. Churches and monasteries are scattered all around the area while the impressive “Euthymias School” a model, mutual-teaching school of 1828, houses the elementary school of the village. The bridge of Mitilinii is another place to visit as it was a very big construction project of its time (1870).
